NBT Hemp Insulation is a natural insulation material made from hemp fibres bound together using a thermoplastic binder and then treated with inorganic salts to provide fire and pest resistance. It is simple to install, and is non-irritant to touch.

It has full European product certification to ETA 06/0040 and also full life cycle environmental certification under the “natureplus” method (see www.natureplus.de ). The manufacturing plant is certified to the ISO 9001:2000 quality standard.

NBT Hemp Insulation is suitable for use in external walls in timber and steel frame buildings, and for all internal applications including walls, suspended floors, lofts and roofs in both new build and renovation. It has many benefits compared to conventional mineral and cellular plastic insulants but is not however suitable for cavity wall insulation, or under ground floor slabs.

Thermally Superior
NBT Hemp has a thermal resistance (k- lambda) of 0.040Wm/K. NBT Hemp batts do not compress, so that if 250mm of insulation is installed into a loft it remains 250mm (unlike nearly all lightweight fibre insulations). The moisture regulating properties of natural fibres mean that insulating properties are retained even when the fibres are damp. These two factors have been shown in tests to improve thermal performance by up to 10% over most lightweight fibre insulations. NBT Hemp Batts also have good acoustic insulation properties and thermal mass. They are vapour open and hygroscopic, making them excellent for use in “breathing” construction.

Durability
NBT Hemp uses simple non-reacting compounds to protect against insects, biological and fungal attack and to make it unattractive to vermin, whilst remaining harmless to common building components such as PVC cables and nailing plates. Natural fibres are also naturally durable because of their great flexural strength. When properly installed Isonat® will retain its loft and thermal performance for the life of the building.

Sustainable and environmental
NBT Hemp fibres are completely inert and harmless. Hemp cultivation requires minimal petroleum additives and helps preserve soil condition. For every 1Kg of hemp insulation used instead of mineral wool, 1.4Kg of CO2 is saved. In addition NBT Hemp Insulation has no VOCs, no CFCs and no Formaldehyde, and does not constitute a waste hazard when disposed of.

Self Supporting, non- slumping
NBT Hemp insulation batts are relatively rigid, having very good loft and an elastic form, so that they hold their size and shape in all specified applications and are easy to fit and hold between rafters and in walls, without additional fixings.

Safe to handle
NBT Hemp is non-toxic, non-hazardous, irritant free and can be handled without any specialist protective clothing.

Fire Protection
NBT Hemp is approved for use as loft, wall, and ceiling insulation (achieving a Fire resistence class E according to EN 13501-1 . This fire protection is achieved by the through coating of the fibres with simple non reacting salt compounds.

Moisture control
Isonat® actively assists in the control of moisture in buildings, drawing vapour away from vulnerable timbers, without any loss of thermal performance or effect on the durability of the insulation. This is particularly important in older buildings, and in modern timber frame structures.

Acoustics
Because of its density (40 Kg/m³) and the complex nature of the fibres NBT Hemp Insulation can help improve acoustic performance in partitions as well as external walls.
